CD Reviews

Melanie wears "maturity" well

"If you liked the unique musical production Melanie's son Beau-Jarred brought to her latest studio album, Crazy Love, you'll love this. Here, Melanie offers her unique interpretations of classics like "As Tears Go By," "I Will Survive," "Those Were the Days," and "We've Got Tonight." This record shows that she is not just a great songwriter and singer of her own songs, but an artist who makes any song she embraces her own. It's interesting to think how these songs would have sounded if Melanie recorded them years ago. They would have sounded great then, no doubt, but her life experiences have brought deeper maturity to her music. Today she can sing "I Will Surivive" and sound like someone who has survived -- because she is. That's what makes her music even more relevant today than ever. Play this album and Crazy Love and you'll hear a 60's artist who has matured and grown with the times and is at the top of her game."
Like A Glove

"You put a classic vocalist together with some of the strongest material written by a host of songwriters recorded with great technical expertise and arrangements, and you've got a recipe for a great record. "Moments From My Life" is a powerful Melanie recording of some truly great material. My favorite, probably because it's always been one of the most moving songs for me, is the Bee Gee's "To Love Somebody." Melanie nails the emotions, "You don't know what it's like to love somebody the way I love you" as the drums pound & thrash. Ambrosia! One of the most fun tracks is Melanie's cover of the Fleetwood's 1959 #1 record "Come Softly to Me." It starts with a scratchy recording of what sounds like the Fleetwoods' original before Melanie updates the sound. Melanie was famous for her "Ruby Tuesday" cover and dons "As Tears Go By" as smoothly as a glove with the plaintive Mick Jagger/Keith Richards melody. Whether it's "Dust in the Wind" or "Ain't No Sunshine," Melanie does a great job of making each track live, as if written for her. This is an excellent set from one of our master musicians. Enjoy!"
Look What She's Done To Their Songs Ma

"It's always interesting to see how different artists approach well-known material; what their take is on it. This album is a real ear-opener and great fun. Melanie comes on strong and sensitive in her treatments of these rock standards and favorites with a flamenco version of "I Will Survive", a bluegrass version of "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" and a rock ballad version of "You Keep Me Hangin' On" that sounds reminiscent of "Nights In White Satin". There's lots more here to show that Melanie has grown older but retained her fine, powerful voice and brings the emotion needed to make it all work. So, look what she's done to their songs Ma. You won't be sorry. She sings them in a brand new key."
