CD Reviews

Classic 1950s big band jazz
James A. Vedda | Alexandria, VA USA | 04/23/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Med Flory, a talented composer/arranger as well as a great saxophonist, is one of the unsung heroes of big band jazz. Those who recognize his name probably remember him as a sideman with bands such as Woody Herman and Terry Gibbs, or as the driving force behind Supersax. This collection features groups Flory led in the 1950s that included notable players such as Al Porcino and Conte Candoli on trumpet, Urbie Green and Bob Burgess on trombone, Mel Lewis on drums, and saxophonists Al Cohn, Bill Perkins, Bill Holman, and Richie Kamuca, among others.

The CD has 21 tracks, and the first 19 are straight-ahead swingers with solos and ensemble work that are a joy to hear. The sound resembles the Terry Gibbs and Bill Holman bands of that era, and for obvious reasons: many of the sidemen are the same, and many of the charts are from the pen of popular arrangers Al Cohn, Lennie Niehaus, Holman, and Flory.

This CD would deserve a 5-star rating if not for the inclusion of the last two tracks, which are simply awful. They come from a 1959 recording session of Flory's short-lived group Sax Maniax, probably done for some commercial purpose and included here for the sake of completeness. I doubt these tracks will make it onto anyone's iPod. But get the CD anyway - there's still almost an hour of fabulous big band jazz."
