CD Reviews

The release of this CD is a dream come true

"As relayed by the group's founding member, Med Flory, in the liner notes to this one-of-a-kind CD, The Best of Supersax and the LA Voices is Mr. Flory's attempt to give some first rate music the chance to be heard that it has always deserved.

To my knowledge, none of the work contained on this disc is currently available on CD, and even the vinyl is pretty difficult to obtain, assuming you have the equipment to hear it. But for those of us privileged enough to have heard the LA Voices back in the 80s, there is not another vocal group then or now that compares to them. The Manhatten Transfer, the New York Voices, even the Singers Unlimited all come to mind, but the LA Voices project such feelings of warmth, grace, and intimacy in their music that anyone hearing them cannot help but feel touched in ways that these other fine groups cannot even come close to.

Along with stunning renditions of a number of standards (Embraceable You, Someday My Prince Will Come, April in Paris), it is the material that Med Flory wrote from the second and third albums that for me really stands out, in particular, Bamboo, Supersax, and Country. The CD concludes with a rendition of the song L.A. that will change forever any feelings you might have had about that city.

I had a hard time even obtaining a copy of this CD through Amazon, which tells me that its distribution channel (could it be Mr. Flory himself?) might not be as efficient as it could have been. Nevertheless, whatever amount of effort you might have to expend to lay your hands on a copy or two is well worth the trouble.

Best wishes to Mr. Flory, Supersax, and the LA Voices. For those of us "in the know," this CD is a dream come true."

"I gave this CD to my husband for his birthday. He loves bebop and Supersax is his favorite group. He enjoys playing his drums along with the music. He was thrilled to have this new collection available on CD, and would love to see some of the other Supersax music not presently available released on CD. He would particularly like the second CD made on the Japanese tour."
