"Real simple technique - tape the forlorn young lady who calls the help line moaning "never acid again" - repeat as needed. But MBM knows the difference between looping something and setting it to music. Real simple harmony - boom, minor chord - then boom, major chord. Deceptively simple, like how Schenker tells us that 2 chords are all most 95-minute symphonies are about. In short, great raw material - so how do the remixes do?

The Freddy Fresh mix sees the original as a story, and fleshes it out with added samples ("I'm not supposed to get annoyed") and politics (society rewards some addictions and punishes others). The Dub Again mix samples Marks & Lebzelter's 60s obscurity "Rock and Other 4 Letter Words" as it makes the drug-music connection. And the Depth Charge mixes take off on the minor/major riff until all the machine's parts lie disassembled on the floor.

Verdict - if MBM has a weakness at all, it's the relentless beat. The remixers did us a service by unearthing other valuable elements hidden in this sterling track."
