Watch Out! Here Comes McFly!
Sweet Pea | USA | 02/04/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"McFly are a great British pop band. I have been a fan of McFly since their debut album Room on the Third Floor. I couldn't wait for their new album Wonderland to come out, and I was pleasantly surprised when I heard it for the first time. This young band (all aged 20 or younger as of the album release) is exceptionally talented for their age. Amazingly, they write all of the lyrics and music themselves. Impressive? I would say so. All of their songs have a unique style that I just can't get enough of! Rarely do I find an album in which ALL the songs are good. The tracks on Wonderland range from cheerful melodies to touching ballads to some good ol' rock n roll. Since I believe each song deserves to be mentioned, here's an individual song rating:

1. I'll Be Ok (9/10)- This is a very upbeat song with a good message to it: when things go wrong, just tell yourself 'i'll be ok'. The chorus is very catchy and it's just simply a good, solid pop song. A great way to start off the album.

2. I've Got You (8.5/10)- This is a happy-go-lucky song about young love. The guitar riffs are very catchy as I find myself humming to the music of this song. The only criticism is that I find some of the lyrics to be a bit corny ( 'cause i've got you to make me feel stronger/ when the days are rough and an hour feels much longer). But this is only a minor fault.

3. Ultraviolet (9/10)- Oooh, this song is good. The song starts of slow.....then.... BAM!- some great guitar riffs enter and stay throughout the rest of the song. This song shows some good rock n roll- a very summery and beachy song that reminds me of the Beach Boys. Fantastic.

4. The Ballad of Paul K (9/10)- This song is one-of-a-kind. A ballad? yes. boring? not at all. Somehow the boys manage to keep your interest through a song about a middle-aged man going through a crisis. With easy going music and bold lyrics (look at what you've thrown away/ they've stood beside you all the way/now its too late, its too late for you) this song is a keeper.

5. I Wanna Hold You (10/10)- One word: Bold. This song makes a statement. It combines awesome guitar playing with lyrics that will get your attention to create a truly fantastic song. Although McFly is a pop band, I'm still going to say it: McFly know how to rock.

6. Too Close for Comfort (10/10)***- This is definitaly my favorite track on the album, and possibly my favorite McFly song ever. From beginning to end, this song is amazing. It's a remarkable song about breaking up that could bring anyone to tears with true, heart-wrenching lyrics such as "everything i feel for you I wrote down on one piece of paper/the one in your hand/you won't understand how much it hurts to let you go". I love everything about this song and wouldn't change a thing.

7. All About You (9/10)- Ok, ready? One... Two... Three... awwwwww! This is a fantastic love song that will remind you about that special someone. Its simplicity makes it so beautiful, as well as the serene melody with violins gently playing in the background. Fantastic.

8. She Falls Asleep (Part 1)(8/10)- A beautiful, no lyric, short, less than two minute orchestra playing melody that gets the listener ready for the second part of the song.

9. She Falls Asleep (Part 2) (8.5/10)- A very soft, piano and orchestra driven song that is based on the heavy subject of suicide. It's very different from the rest of thier album, but it's very refreshing and peaceful. McFly took a risk with this song, and I love it.

10. Don't Know Why (10/10)- For some reason, this song grabs my attention. Somehow, each instrument stands out in its own unique way. The lyrics are very simple but meaningful at the same time, dealing with the harsh reality of broken dreams and relationships (no matter what you say to me/ we are not the same). Overall, it's just a great song.

11. Nothing (9/10)- The album returns to it's cheerful pop melodies, as in the beginning of the album. This is another song about lost love that has a catchy tune that you just can't get enough of. Overall, this song is a carefree, good pop tune.

12. Memory Lane (9/10)- A great way to end the album. This is a great song for reminiscing over old photographs and high school yearbooks. Very nice and well put together. It ends the album with the chanting chorus "so much has changed".

"
Outstanding second album from a truly special band
H A Chapman | UK | 11/08/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

""Wonderland" is the second album by McFly, and just like the brilliant first "Room on the Third Floor" it lives it up to it's high expectations. Every song on this is a classic from the hits "I'll Be OK" and "All About You" to the outstanding "Memory Lane". This really is an essential album, I really hope the boys find success in the US, they truly deserve it."
