This is a perfect collection of--and a perfect introduction to--the music of American composer William Thomas McKinley (b. 1938). McKinley has dared take a traditional route with his music, avoiding most of the fads or movements in American music since World War II. What he does is to apply some of the principles of neo- romanticism to updated architectural forms. His Symphony 4 (1985) and his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra 3 (1994) contain elements of blues and tempo shifts that can only be described as totally American. Catch bits of Gershwin's Second Prelude for Piano in the first movement of the piano concerto. --Paul Cook
