It didn't take long for me to realize that she is a special singer. When the song was over JS simply said "Maude Maggart". The song was Cole Porter's "Looking at You" from Maude's "Look for the Silver Lining" CD. Because I had never heard of Maude but knew I wanted to hear that voice again, I kept repeating her name to myself so I'd remember it (no pen in the car). I believe I've trained my memory in this desperate way only once before-after hearing the then unknown to me Audra McDonald. Well, I bought Maude's CD and it's delightful. Unlike the previous reviewer, I do not find her voice "stunning". It's a small though highly expressive voice that is by turns innocently joyful, gently humorous, sweetly seductive, or hauntingly plaintive. And this lady knows how to phrase. Every song on the CD is a winner, written at a time when popular songs could be, and often were, literate as well as rhythmically and harmonically interesting. Pianist John Boswell is a sensitive and stylish partner. So find a cozy room and dim the lights. Then listen to "Love for Sale" or "Stardust" and be utterly enchanted." And what wonderful songs they are. She includes the often-neglected verses and turns the whole into a story, as the very best cabaret singers always do. A lot of credit goes to John Boswell's arrangements and piano accompaniment--the other ingredient in great cabaret performance. This is not background music--you want to listen closely to every note of the voice and the piano. Every song is done well, but some are special: Love for Sale, Look for the Silver Lining, I'll See You Again."
