CD Reviews

Not a fan of Hospital Music

"Just to put my review into perspective I'll tell you what I thought of the previous albums:

LOTGA - 4/10

Underdogs - 8/10

Beautiful Midnight - 9/10

Audio of Being - 6/10

Avalanche - 9/10

WLRRR - 9/10

Hospital Music - 6/10

With the above said, I would rate Vancouver at a 9 out of 10. Matthew Good is back and as good as he ever was with the new album. Vancouver is incredible from start to finish.

Last Parade - 10/10 - This track reminds me a lot of Weapon, only better.

The Boy Who Could Explode - 7/10 - Average track by MG standards, I don't really like the "what are you thinking" line repeating.

Great Whales of the Sea - 10/10 - Prime Time Deliverance emotion. Awesome

Us Remains Impossible - 8/10 - One of the most radio friendly tracks on the album. Reminds me of "Oh Be Joyful"

On Nights Like Tonight - 9/10 - Another awesome track. So much raw emotion pouring out of MG.

Volcanoes - 8/10 - Dark & sad feeling. "Rat Who Would Be King" kind of vibe

A Silent Army in the Trees - 7/10 - One of my least favorites at this point, although I love the first minute.

Fought to Fight It - 8/10 - 21st Century Living meets the Future Is X-Rated

The Vancouver National Anthem - 6/10 - My least favorite track. I hate the part where he says, "stick to it," sounds kind of corny to me.

Empty's Theme Park - 9/10 - Wow, this might be the best last track on an MG/MGB album to date. "Running for home" quality

Overall, the album is outstanding. There are a couple of tracks I would include in the upper echelon of MG songs along with the likes of Prime Time Deliverance, Blue Skies Over Badlands, Avalanche, and Advertising on Police Cars. In addition to the couple of instant classics, there are a handful of great tracks, 2 good tracks, and 1 track I don't like that much (it will probably be my favorite song in a month, MG works in mysterious ways). With that said, don't wait to pickup this album, it is an incredible experience and is a promising sign of things to come from MG.

Smiling like the devil smiles.

"I always get excited when I hear Matthew good releases a new album. Ever since I heard his work with "The Matthew Good band" I've been hooked by this wit and intoxicating dark lyrics. "Vancouver" is Mr.Good's fourth solo album and his first since "Hospital Music", his most personal and visceral release. On "Vancouver", Good returns much to the form of "Avalanche" and "White Light Rock and Roll Review" forgoing the slow paced introspection that he had on "Hospital Music" and returning to higher energy songs. After listening through "Vancouver" it's prevalent that Good is still wrestling with the same demons he has been facing ever since he picked up a guitar. What makes Good's music so gripping is that each of his songs seem like a personal struggle, a weight on his soul, but he is just to hard nosed and stubborn to let that weight drag him down. "Vancouver" is a solid album. I wouldn't but it up there with "Avalanche" or "White Light" but it's close. It's always good to see one of music's unsung heroes continue to make terrific and completing albums. On the song "On Nights Like Tonight" Good bellows "I smile like the devil smiles, unseen but proud". He maybe unseen but he continues to pour his soul into his work with fantastic results and should be proud. Matthew Good is still going strong and maybe someday he'll get the recognition he deserves. Until then, his core of dedicated fans will continue to reap the benefits.

Typical!!

"I will never understand how absolutely terrible after terrible bands makes it on to the airways in America with the same garbage that everybody and their mother will forget about within one week of their song being off the air, yet the most incredible music you have ever heard is not even a blip on the radar. Vancouver is yet another "typical" Matthew Good album. Typical in the sense that it is amazing. Every song draws a different emotion from you, and the only questioning you have about the album is why more people in America dont know about it. All I really have to say is purchase it and you will love it."
