Synopsis

Album Description
Meditation Bells and gongs from Japan, India, China and Tibet, where these instruments are often used to stun the mind and capture the awareness in meditation, create the matrix from which this music has developed. This space has been arranged and orchestrated by chief navigator Bill Laswell and is the setting for displays of virtuosity from ney player Kudsi Erguner and trumpet player Markus Stockhausen (son of the late composer.) Laswell's bass is the vehicle of forward movement, creating streams and clusters while all players send long lines, short phrases and single tones into space. As in yoga, elements such as breath, gazing and attitude are not made of matter but are integral to a good practice. This music's essence is not a matter of form that can be described but may be experienced through complete attention and absorption by the listener.

Meditative Sounds for a Hectic World
Michael Bettine | Milwaukee, WI United States | 12/08/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Fantastic! I am amazed by the beautiful music here. This is very slow moving, meditative music that can transport you to different realms. All four players are well known around the globe for their technical proficiency, but this recording is far from technical music. Percussionist Mark Nauseef creates delicious, slow rhythmic cycles with ringing Gongs and bells. The brilliant ney player, Kudsi Erguner, layers his haunting flute lines on top of the percussion. Trumpeter Markus Stockhausen then weaves lyrical lines between things, while bassist Bill Laswell, mostly known for playing much more bombastically, is incredibly restrained here. All four musicians let the music breathe, allowing the space between the notes to be heard.

This is just the thing to put on at the end of a hectic day, when you need to relax and wind down. Highly recommended. ~ Michael Bettine"
