CD Reviews

Where is "Brindaremos Por El"????
Rob Ez | Chicago | 08/12/2004
(2 out of 5 stars)

"Massiel, the fantastic Spanish vocalist-turned-disco diva always has something under her sleeve. Her material for Hispavox/EMI is a true testament to her creativity and ability to sing anything. This compilation has some great songs, but not her best..

This CD is basically compiling most songs from only TWO Massiel albums!! They picked 7 songs from her fantastic 1983 album "Corazón De Hierro" and 8 from 1984's "Sola En Libertad". Although they picked most of the album tracks (only 5 are left from both of them combined!), this EMI attempt really fails in delivering, as you will note that out of these 15 songs, they completely ignored THE ONE big hit that Massiel achieved in 1983..."Brindaremos Por El"!

The aforementioned track brought Massiel back into Spanish pop consciousness. It was huge in Spain (5 weeks at #1) but most importantly, it was immensly popular all over Latin America. It hasn't been available on a US CD yet, and it would have been great for Massiel fans who already didn't have it in the US to own...but EMI wasn't thinking.

Ultimately, I gave the rating that I gave, just for the simple fact that, amazingly, this is THE ONLY MASSIEL CD IN PRINT IN THE USA! That is just a sad fact, for Massiel is such a key artist. I am sure that she still has people who think fondly of her, here in the US, and it's a shame that we are ignored. If EMI was a thinking market, it would know that not many albums pre 90's are in print or even available on CD format here in the USA. Most Spanish-speaking countries release old albums and reap the benefits, since they enjoy major sales. There are even record labels in other Spanish-speaking countries (such as Rama Lama Music in Spain) that are simply created to feed the appetite for old and out of print music! Why isn't anything like this created in the US? Wise up, EMI! There is a market for these "oldies" artists!"
