CD Reviews

Amazing Death/Thrash from France! Cult Classic!!!
T. Kasuboski | Winneconne, Wisconsin United States | 09/21/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Like MERCILESS-"The Awakening", INCUBUS-"Serpent Temptation", HYDRA VEIN-"Rather Death Than False of Faith", MORBID SAINT-"Spectrum of Death", MINOTAUR-"Power of Darkness", MORTUARY-"Blackened Images", and early DEAD HEAD, France's MASSACRA were right on the cusp of modern Death Metal. The sound is vintage late-80's speed-metal(particularly German and Brazilian) crossed with the very earliest croakings of the early semi-technical Death Metal of bands like MORBID ANGEL, DEATH, SADUS. So basically, MASSACRA have that long-lost, never-to-be-repeated thrash style which could only exist between the years 1987-1991(approx.), when the extreme metal world was still developing its many sub-genres and various hellish sounds. The factor which makes MASSACRA so memorable however, is their catchiness in songcraft. Despite the insane aggression and speed of their music, MASSACRA still manages to make you want to scream along and thrash your bedroom when you're stoned at 2AM on a cold winter night...Listening to MASSACRA all these years later truly reminds me of just how amazing Death Metal MIGHT have turned out to be had repitition, conformity, and marketing not homogenized the sound and flooded the metal markets with endless clones. MASSACRA forever stands as a testament to the power of hardcore punk crossed with the blackest of speed metal and to the inventiveness of the early pioneers of all things too brutal for you...

If you're a true thrashing maniac you'll immediately shell out the $15 and buy this early French death/thrash metal classic. Get stoned, play it for your friends and watch their expressions of horror. Or, just throw on the headphones and headbang until you're blue in the face! MASSACRA, you guys ruled!!!"
