Synopsis

Amazon.com essential recording
An interesting grab bag of cuts from Marvin Gaye's 18-year career at Motown. His Latin-tinged first single ("Wherever I Lay My Hat," later covered by Paul Young), the smoldering "No Good Without You," and a cover of the Four Tops' "Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever" are among the highlights of the '60s sides cherry-picked here. And that his troubled later years produced their share of beauties is made clear by the sweet "Praise" and self-knowing "Ego Tripping Out." Hope and despair were felt more profoundly in Gaye's music than in that of most other singers, and this intriguing package doesn't let us forget that. --Rickey Wright

More Marvin....

"Great album. This album is a collection of some of Marvin Gaye's lesser known song stretching from 1963-1981. There are a lot of gems on this one. The majority of the songs here are from Marvin's pre-What's Going On Days, Tracks 1-13. But unlike the more recent love starved heart the material is much better. Highlights among these tracks are, Wherever I lay my hat, No good without you, When i had your love, Loving you is sweeter than ever, it's a bitter pill to swallow, Seek and you shall find among others. The last five tracks are mostly post-Whats going on, all good but if you have any of Marvins albums you've heard them before. Not that the songs are bad. Of those the ones I'm really feeling are the overtly sexual You sure love to Ball and the conflicted Heavy love affair. The tracks that were real suprises are tracks 12 and 13. The temptations I wish it would rain is done wonderfully by Marvin, I suprised I hadn't heard his version sooner. And the touching Abraham, Martin and John is very special it's a lot like Marvin gaye's classic singing of the Star spangled banner at the NBA all star game in 1984. Overall a wonderful album full of great songs from one of musics most talented artists."
Pleasing collection of some of Marvin's lesser known hits.

"Thank you Rhino for NOT coming out with another collection of the same ol' Marvin Gaye hits! (lets get it on, I heard it through the grapevine, pride and joy) This is a collection of some of Marvin's lesser known songs. (Seek and you shall find,it's a bitter pill to swallow, I wish it would rain) Many of these tracks are from his I heard it through the grapevine days and while no one track is a standout hit. All of the songs in this collection are very good. There are even a few late 70's early 80's tracks thrown in. Overall this is a good purchase for any true Marvin Gaye fans. (is there anyone that isn't) Pick it up and enjoy ."
