CD Reviews

Underrated Eighties Teen Queen

"Though Martika managed a string of moderately successful singles in the late '80s/early '90s, she was very much Jessica Simpson/Mandy Moore to Britney's Debbie Gibson or Christina's Tiffany. Which is too bad, because when she was on, she was quite good, as this strong compilation can attest to. Though she remains primarily known for 'Toy Soldiers', she had several more dance-pop gems up her sleeve, chief among them the bouncy 'More Than You Know', an excellent cover of Carole King's 'I Feel The Earth Move', and the funky 'Martika's Kitchen'. Though a few tracks here suffer from age(particularly the dated drum machine beats of 'Don't Say U Love Me'), most of the material here suggests that the singer had the potential to outlive her initial fifteen minutes of fame, and for reasons unknown failed to do so."
The Best of Martika

"Martika is probably the most overlooked artist. She is truly a reamrkable artist who came out with the smash hit Toy Soldiers in 1989. Know one really knows waht has happened to her since and it's truly a shame she has not had an album out since 1991. This is an amazing album filled with some of the best pop songs ever recorded, such as the danceable More Than You Know and the slammin remake of I Feel The Earth Move. Other standout tracks include the Prince written tracks. The funky Martika's Kitchen and Spirit. Also included are remixes of some of her hits, including a stunning version of Love Thy Will Be Done. remixed by Prince himself. Martika is truly missed in pop music today and I know alot of people who are awaiting her return. Martika if you are reading this-you are amazing!"
Sensual and groovy

"I only bought this C.D. on a whim, and before this i had never heard any Martika other than her cover of 'I feel the Earth Move'. And now she is one of my favourite artists.'I feel the Earth move' is a really loud and appropriately OTT rock/club song. Very different from her usual relaxed style. Has fantastic dance appeal.'More Than You Know' a nice love song over funky disco.'Toy Soldiers' a very slow and dark song about addiction.'Water' a very intelligent love song with a nice Latino feel.'Martika's Kitchen' Now this one's a bit silly and the sex element is overdone, but it's a fun track with a wonderful beat!'Love..thy Will Be done' This is my favourite track on the album. A nice religious power-ballad with beautiful violin strings, and a sexual rhythm. Beautiful lyrics about love and need sung really soothingly. Sounds a bit like the Cocteau Twins.'Coloured Kisses' a nice song for making out to, or for waking up.'Cross My Heart' another OTT one, but a lot more sincere. Another nice disco sound.'Spirit' Pretty moderate religious dance song.'Temptation'- wonderful lyrics describing a love obsession.'Don't Say You love me'- I don't like this one, the music's too fast and out of key.'Safe In the Arms of love'- simmilar to 'Love...thy Will Be done' a nice slow and soothing love song. And after her greatest hits, the C.D. chronicles her numerous remixes.'More than you know'- a slightly longer version of the original, but little different.'I Feel The Earth Move' a pretty poor remix, it sounds weak compared to the original.'Toy Soldiers' Not so much a remix as a foreign version. Something about Martika singing in Japanese really turns me on!'Love..Thy Will Be done'- At first i avoided listening to this song because i thought it would spoil the original, but when I gave it a chance, I was pleasantly surprised, with a really sexy Hip-Hop beat, it is perfect for slow dancing. This version sounds more like Cibo Matto than the Cocteau Twins. All in all a wonderful collection of songs. Perfect for dancing, perfect for making love to, Perfect."
