Marti's Back and Strong As Ever!
Michael J. Shogi | Reminderville, Ohio USA | 10/22/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

""Wise to You!" is Rockabilly Queen Marti Brom's first disc of new material in three years and her first disc of new Rock-oriented material in four years.

So how does "Wise to You!" stack up? Quite well, in my opinion. Marti certainly has a lot to live up to, given her previous recordings, and "Wise to You" certainly does not disappoint. Classic Rockabilly covers, such as "I Changed My Mind Jack" and "Great Shakin' Fever", sit alongside strong originals, such as "Whole Lotta Lonesome".

In fact, most of "Wise to You!" comprises cover versions of Rockabilly and country-tinged songs. This may disappoint some people, if the songs were not quite as strong. However, "Wise to You's" song selection is varied and well-sung, -played, and -recorded. Marti's voice shows no signs of weakness from her prolonged absence. In fact, her voice is even stronger and more expressive than on previous outings. In addition, Marti employs two excellent bands on this recording (one from Austin, Texas, and one from Helsinki, Finland), but the sound of the songs is uniformly excellent.

"Wise to You!" is a well-balanced and varied recording: You can hear every instrument clearly, with Marti's voice up front. In addition, the songs on "Wise to You!" are of varying tempos and genres, mainly Rockabilly and Country.

Highlights include:

- "I Changed My Mind Jack" and "Great Shakin' Fever" (fast Rockabilly numbers, reminiscent of Gene Vincent, with some exciting drum fills on the former)

- "Why Are You Saving Your Kisses" and "Whole Lotta Lonesome" (classic-sounding Country tunes, the former of which was written by Marti and is reminiscent of Patsy Cline)

- "That Crazy Beat" (another fast number that sounds slightly like early Beatles)

All in all, I give this record 4 1/2 stars - not quite a classic, but close. This is an excellent Rockabilly recording."
Simply put, thsi is a great CD of rockabilly...

"Little gal with a big voice. Tone and voice Qualities of Patsy Cline with an edge. Good music with a great voice. If you like a singer with a great voice and a lot of energy with a variety of styles and sounds you will enjoy this set."
