A Breath of Fresh Air
Jersey Lou | Other side of the World | 09/25/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This cd is excellent - first-rate. For long time Maggie B fans, this is a must-have for the collection. For those of you who aren't familiar with her, go ahead and start here. This cd is a good mix of beloved favorites and new stuff. This is NOT a greatest hits album, with a couple new songs thrown in, so you have to buy it, even if you've got all the other albums. This is something new, even if you think you've heard some of the songs before. Margaret Becker is a very talented person - a great songwriter (lyrics that seem to capture the heart of so many of us and music that doesn't get tired), an amazing voice (I want to sing like her when I get to heaven), and a gifted musician (and she's from NY - if you can't be from Jersey, NY is the next best thing!).I have enjoyed something from all of Margaret Becker's albums, but I confess that I'm more drawn to "Immigrant's Daughter" and "Falling Forward" than "Soul" or "Grace" (though both of those have outstanding cuts on them). But, even if you're more into the latter type of music, I think you'll enjoy "Just Come In", because I think it's the heart and passion that we all love about Maggie B, and it's HERE! This cd has a really intimate feel to it - like we've been invited into her living room to listen to her and her friends play. I get the sense that she just wanted the opportunity to present some of her earlier work in a different way - not necessarily better, but different. Even if you prefer some of the earlier arrangements, this cd works very well as a whole."You're Worthy" is a beautiful worship song - really simple, but right on. I found myself singing "Feel It All" for days after I first listened to it. I just want to get up and dance every time I hear "Hear All Creation". I love the version on the "In Christ Alone" cd (aka "New Irish Hymns") because of the vocals, but I like the fiddle and the lighter feel to this version, too. "All I Ever Wanted" is one of my all time favorites, and the version on this cd is how I always wanted to hear it. :) "No Height, No Depth" is gorgeous and a fitting close to the cd. I can't think of a real 'clinker' on the cd. I would've liked to hear her do "Who Am I" but she couldn't do them all, right? Next time! :)I heartily recommend this cd to long time Maggie B fans, and newcomers as well. There's an awful lot of 'radio-ready' fluff out there, digging a deep rut in the Christian music scene and sounding pretty tired to me. Listen to this one and get a breath of fresh air!"
Acoustic and Intimate

"Responding to fan requests, Margaret Becker released this CD of acoustic recording. With about half songs she's already recorded and half new stuff, this CD feels like the most personal release she has made to date. The old songs are some of my favorites. While she focuses on releases since her official best of with selections like "Feel It All," "Say the Name," and "Clay and Water," she does include two classics that fit in well. These are "All I Ever Wanted" and "Just Come In." This last one especially has never sounded better; it now has such a personal touch to it that really sends the message home. The new songs feel like a modern praise and worship service. There is not one poor selection here, and I think some of them surpass the familiar songs on the CD. I especially like "Hear All Creation," "My Refuge Be," and "No Height, No Depth."With the stripped down production, it feels like we are eavesdropping on Margaret Becker's prayer life. It sounds so different from her old school rock, but I personally like it better then some of her old stuff. It is guaranteed to uplift your spirit. This is a release to treasure."
One of MaggieB's best

"I've heard Margaret Becker's acoustical concerts, which are so amazingly, astonishingly good that you walk out in a daze. This album closely approximates that experience. The songs are mostly familiar, but they are updated and have an acoustical rather than a "rock" sound. A MUST for any fan of the incomparably fabulous Margaret Becker, who in my opinion is the best Christian vocalist and guitarist who ever lived."
