Margaret Becker Still Speaks
Mark Baker | Santa Clarita, CA United States | 01/20/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I'll admit I've never been the biggest Margaret Becker fan. At times, her songs just don't connect with me. But when they do, they connect in a big way. As a result, I keep buying her discs. Her latest project is another great example.

One thing that hasn't changed is her style. Margaret is still a rocker. Okay, so it's not quite as hard and definitely not 80's, but that's a good thing. Instead, we get great guitar rock to go with her incredible lyrics.

The first song that actually connected with me was "Dear John," a break up letter written after some time has passed. While she sings of moving on, I do still find the song heart breaking. "Coming Up for Air" talks about taking the time to heal, while "Fly" is about faith to do the impossible. And I love the slower "You're Still God" for its simple faith and "To be an Indian" for its cry for faith. And the fact that those two songs are back to back just makes them even more special.

As usual, there are a couple songs that don't connect with me. "All I Need" is just too simple lyrically. I really do expect more from her. "Surrender" falls into the same boat.

But I've saved my favorite for last. "Just Isaac" takes its cues from Sarah's attempts to help God give Abraham an heir. It never condemns her; in fact, it admits to the same attempts to assist God. Considering how impatient I can be, it's a good reminder for me.

There are some new Margaret Becker gems in this collection. If you have ever been a fan of her music, you owe it to yourself to pick this disc up."
