Synopsis

Product Description
Lazaro Pla, known as Manteca, was a master bongonsero who first rose to fame in 1940 s Cuba when he was a featured attraction with the great pianist and composer Ernesto Lecouna and the renowned Cuban Boys, a leading exponent of the Cuban musical wave. Although Manteca is found on many recordings originating from Cuba, only a very small amount of material exists of him as a featured soloist or as the leader of a small combo. Thus the world of recorded Cuban percussion is far richer for the recordings present in this collection, which are indeed quite rare. Vinyl copies of the original LP exchange hands for hundreds of dollars apiece on auction sites, DJs from around the globe have sampled the exotic rhythms, and the few CDs that were pressed have been long out-of-print until now.

CD Reviews

" Manteca " The Great Bongosero!
Oswald Placeres | Netherlands | 03/29/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Lazaro Pla, known as "Mantaca" to all the Cubans, was one of the best bongoseros from Cuba. I had the pleasure to meet him in person back in 1977 in a night club, while attending a post class graduation celebration. His background goes back to the early days when he was the bongo player for the great Cuban pianist and composer Ernesto Lecuona and the Cuban Boys. This CD has a great variety of rhythms with Carlos (patato) Valdes on congas and Nelson (El Flaco) Pardon on timbales both great Cuban percussionists. + Lazaro Pla + (Manteca) R.I.P."
