Synopsis

Product Description
Manilal Nag belongs to the Vishnupur Gharana, which spearheaded the flowering of classical music in Bengal in the 19th - early 20th centuries, forging a continuity between the dhrupad music of the rudra veena and post-dhrupad sitar music. Manilal presents raga Nat Bhairav, a morning melody blending the mildly playful element of raga Nat with the profundity of raga Bhairav.

CD Reviews

Had it for a few months now and it's one of my favorites!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I'll begin bluntly. BUY THIS CD! I could just leave it at that and feel I've said all that words could actually convey about this recording, but I'll give more description. On this disc, Manilal performs a 37-minute alap, jor and jhala in Raga Nat Bhairav on the surbahar. Part 2 is an alap and 2 gats in Raga Nat Bhairav on sitar with Samir Chatterjee accompanying on tabla. In total, around 76 or 77 minutes of music here. This is one of the best Hindustani cd's I have bought in the past couple years. In case you're not sure, the surbahar is a bass sitar. It has a lower, more resonant tone and Manilal is the absolute meend-master on surbahar. It's a shame that there aren't more surbahar masters (and thusly, recordings) out there, as it is one of the king instruments of Hindustani music, in my opinion. The alaps on this cd are priceless. Two of my all-time favorites out of my whole collection. Manilal has a certain magic to his playing. He makes every note count, every note sing. Music at its best can take you out of yourself, and this cd does that. Manilal can hypnotize you out of your own body. There is more to "Indian music" than just Ravi Shankar, and this cd is a fantastic example."
