CD Reviews

One of the finest examples of Afro Prog
bluesyazer | 04/28/2004

"back in the late 60s as rock bands around the world experimented with new sounds, critics fumbled to come up with a catch phrase for what was being created. In England, bands like King Crimson and Yes were blending classical and jazz with rock. So too in America were bands blending many styles with rock. Mandrill were one of those bands. Alternately sounding like King Crimson and Santana and completely original, Mandrill were one of the first rock bands to have an album side long opus. Before Close to the Edge and Lizard was Amani Na Mapenzi (Peace and Love), recorded in 1970. Sometime during the 80s the term "prog" was coined for the progressive rock music of the early 70s and in retrospect Mandrill were certainly prog, albeit of an African-American variety; Afro Prog."

"The crazy thing about Mandrill by Mandrill is that my name is Mandrill as well, so Mandrill could be listening to Mandrill by Mandrill. Crazy!"
