CD Reviews

I've been infected...

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Heavy metal has long been a realm of male supremacy (Carnivore anyone) with a few notable metal females rising to the top of a vat filled with boiling testosterone. Some of these females are passed off as metal front women, but most are operatic or melodic vocalists that always look and sound like they've been pressured into fronting a metal band. None look like they want to be there. And if they do want to be there, they look uncomfortable in the metal environment. Examples? Look at Nightwish, Within Temptation, Epica, or Sirenia to name a few. Talented vocalists? Yes. Real "metal" front women? In my opinion, no.

So along come extreme metal bands like Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult, Demonic Christ, and now Malsain who are fronted by women who can easily give the men a run for their money. Especially in the extreme metal scene where the music is not for the faint of heart or weak-willed. In an effort to condense this review, I won't even go into classic metal female-fronted bands like Warlock with Doro Pesch who absolutely ruled the school.

I first came across Malsain on a random MySpace page. The person had one of those music video player thingies (if my technical language is too much, please let me know) embedded on their page and it automatically started playing this badass black metal band. The band of course was Malsain and the song was off of their debut album They Never Die and the tune was Kvele Seg. I found it on YouTube and immediately embedded it on my own personal page. Then I found Malsain's own MySpace ([....]) and tracked down They Never Die and The Disease and snatched them up. But not on Amazon. I found them cheaper elsewhere.

The Disease is beautiful. Every track oozes old school black metal ala Burzum or Khold but at the same time injects something new into the music which I can't exactly put my finger on. There is a keyboardist but her work is minimal at best. She gives atmosphere to some song intros yet barely touches the songs themselves. I love this aspect. In fact I think it's a perfect fusion of keyboards into this extreme style. The vokillist, Skumring, is absolutely brutal. Listening to this without knowing a woman was fronting the band, you could easily be fooled into thinking that a man was delivering such a powerful performance. The music throughout this album is mid-paced black metal. If you're looking for blast beats, go somewhere else. It's a slow bang which gives me goosebumps the more I listen to it. Haunting, eclectic, weird, and brutal are all words that sum The Disease up for me.

Keep the horns raised high and add Malsain to your collection as soon as possible!"
