CD Reviews

A literal tidal wave of ear candy!
10/10/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Walter Egan and John Zambetti reunited to reform the 60's group The Malibooz in 1981 and recorded this CD for Rhino Records. This reissued version on The Pier Group label contains several treats and bonus tracks for all of you diehard surf collectors out there. This is a special edition CD with the original liner notes taken from the Japanese import. A very large majority of Surf music is instrumental, not this CD. Vocals are the strongest element and focal point of this group. Of course the music is fantastic as well, the vocals just compliment everything else that is happening. 22 tracks of quintessential Surf/Pop. Filled with the spirit of youth and lightheartedness this collection romps, stomps and surfs it's way into your heart and psyche. Throughout this is a complete joy to listen to. A special bonus is an interview with the group back in 65' recorded live at the World's Fair. I normally don't expect that much in the vocal department from surf groups because they just aren't that good, that's why they play instrumentals to begin with. This is an exception to the rule. This is a real treasure for anyone's collection. A literal tidal wave of ear candy! Have a bite."
