After the disbandment of his noise-rock-band "Loop" in 1990, guitarist Robert Hampson evolved into a more gentle and ambient sound. Nevertheless there can be found some really loud guitar-riffs and crunching basses in here, presented in a mostly dark atmosphere. Reviewed as a whole, "Hydra-Calm" is a bit uneven, but it gives you a good overview of the innovative ambient-rock provided by this band." Of The Motion Pool Frame of Mind! It is still ambient space rock, however the purcussion of this record is slightly more profuse on tracks one through six. I like that because that is the style which first attracted to Main. In contrast to Motion Pool, this recording is mixed MUCH better. The dronish tempos are inviting, dark and interesting. The bass is prominate and the guitar enhances the overall mood (not trying to steal the show). There is less experimentation with alternate sound scapes here. There is more a reliance on the drone band sound. Each performance is more cohesive to me. Sever and Thrist are two songs of a different contrast. They are still more driven by the band sound than strickly tape loops. The pieces build with Whirring guitar feedback tapestries that keep the tracks interesting. Again, this is ambient space rock for your ears, head and moods. Satisfying spin!"
