Synopsis

This is a highly individual interpretation that drove several specialist Mahler critics crazy when it first came out, largely on account of the blazingly fast first movement. While I wouldn't recommend this as your one and only recording of the piece, the fact is that it's simply exciting as hell, and a kick to listen to every so often. A performance for the already converted, then, but one that deserves respect, and as it's available on just one disc, it's a good deal too. --David Hurwitz

Sadly overlooked recording

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is THE Mahler 6th -- I would like to imagine this is how Mahler conducted it. Yes, the first movement moves, but it's not that much faster that Bernstein or Solti, the playing is superb, the sound top notch. The climaxes are thrilling. Rather than turning the sixth into some quasi-religious, soul-searching journey, Jarvi treats like a symphony: pure music. It works, and I can't imagine anyone not liking it. The rest of Mahler that Jarvi did is also very good to great (#s 1, 3, 4, 5), but the 8th on BIS is a non-starter, sorry to say. I wish he had recorded all the symphonies -- Jarvi could be an ideal conductor for the 7th. (Too bad Amazon has the wrong picture with this -- that's another, poorer, recording pictured there.)"
