"On this recording we hear a live 1982 concert take of Mahler's second symphony. Structurally similar to Kubelik's 1969 studio recording for DG, this performance has better sound and a more powerful, radiant interpretation. The recording is warmer, with a more prominent bass and sharper focus on details (the organ and the bells at the end of the finale are beautifully presented). It is marginally slower: total for the DG 1969 is 76:18, Audite 1982 is 80:00, providing a somewhat greater grandeur to the performance. Finally, Brigitte Fassbaender is an excellent soloist for the fourth movement. There are thus good reasons for including this fine performance in a Mahler CD collection."
