Synopsis

Amazon.com essential recording
Here's a delightful coupling: Mahler's First Symphony and the song cycle that donated many of its themes to the larger work. Best of all, both performances are superb. Rafael Kubelik is the dark horse among Mahler conductors. His interpretations are always fresh, unforced, and seemingly without exaggeration. However, he knows how to build a climax, and his generally swift tempos never permit a minute's boredom. There are many moments to cherish in his performance of the symphony, not least the delicious woodwind playing and the tangy trumpets in the third movement's Fiddler on the Roof music. Reissued at midprice in excellently remastered sound--better than most new digitals in many respects--this is a performance that remains one of the best, and as a coupling it's unbeatable. --David Hurwitz

CD Reviews

Well worth looking for!

"I already had two recordings of Mahler's First Symphony before. But I didn't have this one. I heard so many great reviews of this recording, and so I finally decided to buy this recording. And I was amazed! The performance was exhilarating, as it was exciting. I would definitely recommend this recording to anyone looking for a recording of Mahler's First. END"
By far the best Mahler First out there...

"I like this recording even more than Bernstein's on DG since Kubelik doesn't twist and turn the music until it becomes something else. Bernstein's tempi are really quite dragging and there are too many places where he gets sentimental (trio of the second movement, for example). Not so with Kubelik. In this recording, everything is fresh yet powerfully expressive, and the final triumph is overwhelming. Fischer-Dieskau's voice fits the Wayfarer Songs like a glove. These recordings are fully worthy of their "classic" status."
