CD Reviews

Perhaps one of Lully's best operas?
Steven Guy | Croydon, South Australia | 09/23/2006

"Perhaps this is a greta opera!?

I am not sure. However, this is a great recording of this great opera and I have listened to it oh-so-many times on my own and with my parents.

Lully's score is very colourful, what with his banks of oboes, bassoons, strings and continuo.

Lully's operas are incredibly good, in my opinion, and if Hervé Niquet's recent DVD of Persée is anything to go on, Jean-Baptiste Lully's operas are well worth staging and recording for future audiences.

Phaëton is a marvellous work and the cast of this recording is excellent: Howard Crook, Rachel Yakar, Jennifer Smith, Véronique Gens, Jean-Paul Fouchécourt, Philippe Huttenlocher and Laurent Naouri are featured. Ensemble Vocal Sagittarius sings the choruses and Les Musiciens du Louvre provide the orchestral accompaniment.

Marc Minkowski directs.

Philippe Quinault wrote the libretto and Lully provided us with marvellous music for this opera."
Great opera, but be aware of this recording!

"This recording is great! The problem is that I ordered what I thought was complete opera, paid full price and got highlights! One disc of highlights from a five act opera! To say the least I was disappointed. Not in the performance which is terrific, but by the misleading ad on Amazon. I have never complained about Amazon before, but this time they missed their consistently high mark! If you read the ad carefully (which I did not at the time of purchase), you will find that it says ONE disc, but 72 tracks. The disc that arrives will have 37 tracks. So just be aware, that you are not getting a complete opera. I would love to have it complete, because the performance of Lully's music is wonderful!"
