Synopsis

Album Description

Luciano was one of the most promising new singer-songwriters to emerge in 1993. He voiced his debut tune for Herman Chin-Loy at Aquarius, and then did half an album with Pressley for Mau Mau producer Sky High. His first Jamaican hit, "Give My Love A Try," was for Castro Brown and a clutch of ballads and self-penned songs soon followed. Here, Turbulence is featured on the track "Music Is Life" and the album was produced and mixed by DJ Flava.

"UPRIGHT: This is Luciano's fourth release in the last couple of months - along with HAIL THE COMFORTER for Jet Star, JAH WORDS for RAS, and a second installment of the REGGAE MAX compilation series - and as you might expect, there's little variance in quality: it's classic Luciano, righteous, uplifting and affirmative. If anything UPRIGHT finishes the race a nose ahead of other recent releases, at least in part because it's produced by the same team that put together Turbulence's JOIN US, Sizzla's SPEAK OF JAH, and Anthony B's SMOKE FREE - all well-above average releases. If you own any of these records, you'll probably recognise one or two of the rhythms from UPRIGHT, although Luciano's takes are predictably rather less fiery than those of the aforementioned singjays. In fact, the mood is uniformly mellow from start to finish. If you're in the market for classic new-roots reggae without all the gun talk and dancehall slackness, UPRIGHT is recommended."
