CD Reviews

Listen to the Louvins!
Mcgivern Owen L | NY, NY USA | 08/21/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Ira and Charlie Loudermilk from Section, Alabama performed as The Louvin Brothers. According to Billboard, they had 12 chart hits from 1955 to 1962, when they broke up. 9 are right here on this very fine compilation. The other 11 tracks are all enjoyable. The Louvins feature a wonderful tight, almost piercing harmony, a hard banjo sound and moving lyrics. There is an almost frantic tone to the music, virtually demanding the listener's attention. In the Tom T. Hall tradition, many tell a story. This reviewer's favorites were "Must You Throw Dirt in My Face?" and "While You're Cheating On Me". The former was their final chart hit. The latter is a wonderful "cheating" song- a topic representing a veritable treasure trove of country classics. The album also includes "I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby", their only #1 recording. Ira was tragically killed in a 1965 car crash, caused by a drunk driver. How many country greats have died in car and plane crashes? Charlie carried on for another 9 years, but this reviewer is unfamiliar with his solo work. Together, the brothers made wonderful, if serious music together. As has been written before-since when does country have to cheer you up? Just listen to the Louvins. Those not familiar with their music are encouraged to be adventurous!"

"Ira and Charlie's classic harmonies are here in crystal clear sound. Nearly all of their hits and superb album cuts are featured on this 20 song collection. I would like to see Charlies solo work with Capitol records on CD as well. Brother harmony at it's finest. Don't pass this one up!!!"
Fantastic album

"These guys are the epitome of country "duet". The harmonies are absolutely phenomonal; it will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. The Louvin's "Knoxville Girl" is worth the price of this album alone; although there isn't a bad track on the whole CD."
