A Turning Point for Lonnie Smith?
Terje Biringvad | Oslo, Norway | 02/12/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Released a year after Think, this 1969 album is a very natural step further for Lonnie in his Blue Note career. Hornsection with Lee Morgan, Julian Priester and Bennie Maupin gives this album the right power for funky tunes with Lonnie trademark of B3 playing. The only "standard" tune is Eleanor Rigby, and I guess both Lennon / McCartney would smile to Lonnie's interpretation and arrangement. The good news is that Blue Note evenually released this album outside of Japan for a normal street price. A must have album for B3 collectors!

"Turning Point is organist Dr. Lonnie Smith's second release on the Blue Note label (Think! being the first). This 1969 recording features a few noteworthy performances (Slow High, Eleanor Rigby, and Turning Point). The remaining tracks are largely forgettable.

This recommended for fans of the organ combo in general and Dr. Lonnie Smith fans in particular.
