CD Reviews

It should hit the US soon if Bukem's becoming popular there

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Recently published LTJ Bukem's "Journey Inwards" seems to have further escalated a trend for mellow, ambient Drum'n'Bass typically symbolized in the extensive use of live string and horn instruments. In short, London Elektricity fits perfectly with this development--though, some tracks recorded on "Pull the Plug" dates back even to '96 and most '98. That means tracks here are older than any tracks on "Journey Inwards". That's amazing. I wonder if they foresaw the future. There are no shorter tracks than 7 min on this album (I have normal one with 9 tracks) and they vary from down-tempo soul/triphoplike one with smooth female voice singing, to wickedly energizing bass that make you stand up and dance (I just wish that they would feature MCs in the next album). Unfortunately, live performance was cancelled when I went to see them but the two main man, Tony Colman and Chris Goss did more than a good job to keep the audience going with very very hard beats. It seems to me that today's Drum'n'Bass scene is more lively than ever thanks to musicians committed to entertain and experiment, by presenting different forms and possibilities to this culture. And I just can't forget London Elektricity among them."
