CD Reviews

A "Warning"
M. Figg | USA | 12/20/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"While I did find the music and performance on this CD enjoyable, a note of caution if you purchase it based on the back cover's notes. While the back of the CD cover does advertise this CD as music by a "Baroque Paganini", the liner notes as well as the music contradict this description. The music is by turns lush, energetic and somber and beautifully played, but it is all in style and manner extremely reminiscent of Corelli's reserved, modest concerti grossi. As it turns out, this is Locatelli's early music, and the daring figures and techniques the back cover mentions did not figure prominentely until Locatelli's later works, which are NOT featured on this CD.

In short, if you are looking for variations on Corelli's beautiful if somewhat reserved music, incorporating a slightly larger concertino group and occasionally some darker orchestral colors, you'll enjoy this CD. For more innovative Baroque violin music, let ME know what Locatelli's later music is like, or stick with good old Vivaldi."
Another excellent baroque release from Harmonia Mundi

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Harmonia Mundi's discs are not cheap, but so far I haven't been disappointed by any of their superb baroque releases. This Locatelli recording is yet another example of HM's excellence in this musical category.

Locatelli, who was a violin prodigy, was most noted for his concertos for that instrument. These concerti grossi, which were written when the composer was in his 20's, are not the virtuoso showpieces for which he became best known. They instead reflect the influence of Corelli's concerti grossi - they're beautifully scored & filled with flights of musical imagination. It's practically impossible not to tap your foot along with the allemande of the tenth concerto, which opens the disc (and which the liner notes mistakenly identify as no. 11).

By the way, not all the concerti are included here - the Freiburger orchestra selected nos. 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, & 10 for inclusion on this one disc overview.

Warmly recommended."
