CD Reviews

Excellent Songs but...

"The Best of Lobo on Rhino has more songs and after I got it, I haven't played this one since. Just the same, the songs are all great, and any Lobo fan will not be disappointed. Also consider the Import album, The Very Best of Lobo. I also bought all of Lobo's early albums (with extra cuts and at great prices) from Amazon.com.UK when they were available. Introducing Lobo/Of a Simple Man is still available on one CD (23 cuts). Calumet (Import) with 15 cuts, is available used or from other dealers and has some the 10 original and 5 extra cuts, including the original version of Stoney never released before (completely changes the feel, but worth the price by itself),and includes the single versions (radio play) of A Simple Man, How Can I Tell Her, and Don't Expect Me To Be Your Friend-different from the album cuts (the album cut of How Can I Tell Her is there also, of course, while the other two album cuts are from other albums). Also look for Just a Singer which also includes the entire album of A Cowboy Afraid Of Horses (22 cuts). Of course if you are a big Lobo fan you may realize he recorded in Asia for a number of years and put out some excellent music, including a song called Sometime which matches up with anything else he ever did. If you can find the Imports of his American albums I described, they are worth the money. If you can find the Albums from Asia (with original songs, not his USA cuts), buy them and you won't be disappointed. Asian Moon is a great one to try (21 tracks. www.fansoflobo.com/ is the ultimate source for Lobo info, the Official website. If you are not a fan of Lobo yet but like acoustic music or any of his songs you've heard, give this album or any of the others a chance. The only album I wouldn't start with is the vinyl version of Just a Singer because you don't get a feel for Lobo as a songwriter, and at his best, or an Asian release that was all instrumental (matching the identical songs he also sang on another album)."

"Lobo probably never received the recognition he deserved, but those of us who love and identify with his music give him nothing but high marks. It brought back a lot of memories from the mid 1970's for me. It contains the familiar songs "I'd Love You to Want Me" and "Me and You and a Dog Named Boo", plus some lesser known but equally good songs like "How Can I Tell Her", "Way I Came In", and "Don't Expect Me to Be Your Friend". If you love the music from the first half of the 1970's, this CD needs to be a part of your collection. It is highly recommended!"
