CD Reviews

Jammin' at its finest!

"Mercifully, Johnny Winter does not sing on this album, but his second guitar adds a lot. There are just four songs on this rather short CD, but two of them clock in at about 15 minutes each. The CD opens with a Big Boss Man that would have made Pigpen of the Grateful Dead proud, and then there are a couple of fairly forgettable tunes before the CD closes with another long jam, this one on Bright Lights, Big City."
Fake!

"Don't buy this as IMHO (being an old Johnny Winter fan for over 30 yrs), I honestly don't think Johnny Winter had anything to do with any part of this CD. It's made in France, all writing is in French, has no credits, listings or photos to any players and mostly, there's NO part of any of it that even sounds remotely like Johnny Winters guitar, NO not even his very early stuff from the mid 60s.
I'm going to try returning my copy as I'm sure it's a fake. I don't know who's really playing on it but it's poor quality, very old and not worth keeping."
Bad recording but really happened according to Big Boss Man:

"The only reason i can see that this cd was released was that its the only actually live performance by Jimmy Reed. I cant tell if Johnny Winter is playing as the distortion is terrible. It has to be a cd that is desired to have by the extreme Jimmy Reed fan to put on the shelf and add to the collection, as far as quality, it is BAD! And I am a great fan of Jimmy Reed. The only reason i give it a 2 rating is because its a rarity in its own, but quality of recording deserves a 1! As i read the book titled - Big Boss Man - The Life and Music of Bluesman Jimmy Reed,it assured me that this event really happened and had a lot of distortion, but actually the only "LIVE" recording that is available by Jimmy Reed, no matter how bad the sound is! If you doubt this is true, then read on the back of Johnny Winter CD, Liberty Hall Sessions and here it reads about the 4 songs that on that cd and the same 4 songs on this cd, which really makes me happy to know that it truly is his only real live recording. The back of the CD reads as follows about the 4 songs - Recorded on stage and backstage at Liberty Hall, Houston between 1966 and 1969!"
