CD Reviews

A rare interpreter of lyrics

"Well, I thought I'd be the first to review this, but I see I have to get in line! Lisa is a singer who has been working primarily out of Pittsburgh for the past decade, and this is her debut CD. Her voice is above average and her experience is readily apparent in the vocal resources she brings to bear. Her vocals and arrangements are fairly straightforward stylistically, not flashy. I think her real strength lies in her ability to interpret lyrics sensitively and persuasively, even in frequently recorded standards. There are never enough jazz singers who are really good at lyrical interpretation. Most of these songs have not been done to death, and she has something fresh to say about each of them. One high point is a rather remarkable show tune reminiscent of classic Rodgers and Hammerstein called "Miss Byrd" It probably will be new to most listeners, who probably will be glad to find it. Another high point is a deeply moving version of "Ballad of the Sad Young Men," which the singer dedicates to male friends who have been lost to AIDS. Many of the songs on the album have touches of either rhythm and blues or Brazilian music. The rhythm section is supported by soloists on sax, trumpet, and guitar. This is an unusually good debut vocal jazz album that I believe will please most fans of the genre, as it did me."
A joy to listen to Lisa.!

"By good fortune on surfing the net we came across Lisa's web site and brought her C.D "now I know." What a voice ,with clarity, soul ,the full range of feelings and heart she sings from the sexy Miss Bird, through the fever, to the ballad of the young men ,wow the full range. Oh for her to sing" Cry me a river",we are sure the similarity to J.L.would be apparent.Lisa also duets well with her musicians with laughter and sorrow a great performance."
A very good debut from a spectacular artist

"I recently heard Lisa Hindmarsh on an internet radio broadcast. The sheer beauty of her voice was enough to convince me I wanted to hear more, so I bought her CD. It's a very impressive debut. Buy it for "Spring Can Really Hang You Up" which will rival any interpretation you've ever heard (the purity of her sustained notes will give you goosebumps), "Ballad of the Sad Young Men" which still brings me to tears after a hundred listenings, "Bluesette" which I used to think was boring but now soars with gentle beauty, "Lullaby of Birdland" for three words: "kiss me sweet", "Miss Byrd" for some of the best vocal acting I've ever heard, and "Meaning of the Blues" which knocked my socks off. I'd bet Ms. Hindmarsh's next recording is going to get some serious attention. Her musicianship and artistry, even though this is a "debut" recording, is just spectacular. With a little maturity and some top players behind her, there will be no limit to where she can go. Highly recommended. BUY IT!!"
