Synopsis

Album Description
Musicians: Linda Presgrave ? Piano, Arranger, Composer Harvie S ? Bass Wei-Sheng Lin ? Bass Eric Allen ? Drums Stan Chovnick ? Soprano Sax, Whistle, Indian Bells Oliver Lake ? Alto Sax, Flute With her third release on Metropolitan Records, New York based modern mainstream jazz pianist Linda Presgrave takes the listener on a true adventure. From the title track, The Journey, to the ending march, Ptah, the El Daoud, the CD features compositions of seven jazz musicians who happen to be women including Alice Coltrane, Melba Liston, Marian McPartland, Ann Ronell, Shirley Scott, Mary Lou Williams as well as five originals by Presgrave. The CD displays Linda?s arranging, composing and performing skills in solo, trio, quartet and quintet settings with some of her favorite jazz musicians. THE INCEPTION FOR "THE JOURNEY"- On a plane ride home after a performance in Italy on Patrica Adkins Chiti?s concert series entitled ControCanto: Donne in Jazz (women in jazz), an idea for a project came to Linda. Along with being humbled by the great work that Patricia Adkins Chiti was doing for women composers with her Italian based organization, Donne in Musica (women in music), she began to think about how many remarkable women jazz musicians there are who have written music that is not performed very often. When Linda arrived back in New York, she immediately started searching for compositions that could be added to her own ensemble?s repertoire. In early 2004, a call for proposals came from the Italian based foundation to the members of the International Women in Jazz. Linda eagerly submitted her proposal to Donne in Musica and was fortunate to be selected to perform on the 2004 ControCanto: Donne in Jazz concert series with her own quartet. This CD, The Journey, is a direct result of that performance and serves as a special tribute to all women in jazz.
