CD Reviews

"Hats Off..." To Lighthouse
Ralph Quirino | Keswick, Ontario Canada | 06/04/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Lighthouse was a Canadian success story at a time in the country's pop history when it needed international pop heroes it could call its own (remember, this was at a time long before the advent of Celine Dion, Bryan Adams and Shania Twain). Having emerged out of the ashes of The Paupers (another infamous sixties pop act to have emerged out of Toronto's Yorkville scene far too early in its career), Lighthouse, like Chase, Chicago and BS&T found no problem in mixing loads of brass into their breeazy post-Woodstock rock/pop. This album (a reissue of the same anthology originally available on Denon) contains all the band's key songs. Still sounding great are "One Fine Morning", "Hats Off To The Stranger" and, of course, "Sunny Days". Still cool after all these years. A great collection and the only title you'd ever really need."
A plethora of hits by one of Canada's best known acts

""The Best Of Lighthouse: Sunny Days Again" features 16 greatest hits from one of Canada's best known imports. "One Fine Morning", Lighthouse's best known song here in the States, reached an impressive Top 30 on the Billboard pop chart in 1971. Some mighty fine Canadian Content selections make appearances here as well. In an ode to good times and backyard barbeque fun, there's "Sunny Days". "Pretty Lady" is wonderful and has a unique warmth and charm all its own. Lighthouse also displays a funky and soulful side in the tracks "Hats Off To The Stranger" and "You Girl', although the latter track can be overly repetetive. Man, talk about horns! Skip Prokop & Co. go at you full steam and at full throttle with every note played. Prokop's drumming skills are in top form in this excellent collection of songs. When you listen to this disc, you'll think you're listening to Lighthouse live and in the flesh! All the other selections on this disc not mentioned here are worth repeated listens as well. So, please, by all means, listen to this disc with the volume cranked up for best listening pleasure! If you like early Chicago (Transit Authority), Blood, Sweat & Tears, The Buckinghams, etc., you'll love Lighthouse! Don't miss out on this musical extravaganza.
