CD Reviews

1955 west coast jazz at laguna beach
Jazzcat | Genoa, Italy Italy | 04/28/2003

"Nice concert of the Lighthouse all stars including Frank Rosolino on trombone, Barney Kessel performing Round Midnight accompanied by the Stars, and the Hampton Hawes trio. Historical live recording. Musthave for any serious jazz collector."
No Exception Here

"West Coast jazz, as typified by the various members of Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars, was often referred to as "cool," as opposed to "hot," which always seemed like a subtle rap against it.....as if the music was lightweight and less worthy. Nothing could be further from the truth! These guys swing and swing hard each and every time out. The music on this CD, recorded live at a 1955 concert at Laguna Beach, is no exception. Everyone's playing is worth hearing and, as was the case with the Lighthouse groups, various band members get a chance to appear in what was referred to as "the solo spotlight." I especially enjoyed guitarist Barney Kessel on "'Round Midnight" and pianist Hampton Hawes on "Walkin.'" Of course, I had heard of Kessel and Hawes before, but this was the first time I had the chance to hear them play. I also really dug the catchy opening tune "Witch Doctor No. 2." All of the Lighthouse All-Star recordings are worth owning; this one is no exception."

I originally purchased.Lighthouse at Laguna in the mid fifties, in record form. As I have played the record to death over the years, I purchased it in CD form.

Standaouts for me are Witch Doctor, as an old and fading trombonist, anything that Frans Rosolino plays, is great and the top line participants such as Barney Kessell, I actually met him at a concert in Kiama NSW about ten years ago, what a gentleman, Hampton Hawes, so the list goes on. This CD provides the ultimate in West Coast jazz.

All the musos's were on their game and the CD was beautifuuly produced.
