Synopsis

Album Description
Originally recorded Live at the Moonwalker Club, Aarburg, Switzerland on May 1, 1992. The ensemble features Lester Bowie, E.J. Allen, Gerald Brazel, Tony Barrero (trumpet), Frank Lacy, Louis Bonilla (trombone), Vincent Chancey (French horn), Bob Stewart (tuba), Vinnie Johnson (drums), Famoudou Don Moye (percussion). The compositions, which are punctuated with graceful, occasionally humorous solos, touch on the full breadth of Bowie's and the ensemble's interests and skills. For instance, a pair of songs by Michael Jackson shows the ensemble's interest in contemporary pop. There're also Rahsaan Roland Kirk's 'Three for the Festival' and Jimmie Lunceford's 'Siesta for the Fiesta'. 'For Louis', by Phillip Wilson (to whom the album is dedicated) is another well-suited and finely executed piece. The show closes with 'The Great Pretender', one of Brass Fantasy's signature numbers. I & O. 2005.

CD Reviews

Nice live release...
Allan MacInnis | Vancouver | 11/12/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Lester Bowie died not too long ago -- something to feel sad about. This CD is a fine live recording of the Brass Fantasy doing their playful, exuberant thing. The cover and title refer to the LA Riots, happening around the time of the recording, but the somber theme doesn't stop the band from doing what they do. Really, there's nothing EXCEPTIONAL about this CD, though. I ONLY HAVE EYES FOR YOU remains their most fully realized and satisfying disc, and there's nothing really to recommend about this recording above all others, unless, like, someone is obsessed with the LA riots. Steve Turre fans note that he doesn't appear on this CD."
