Synopsis

No one has more fully conveyed the impassioned exuberance of the score than Leonard Bernstein did in this 1960 recording, the capstone of a Schumann symphony cycle he and a fired-up New York Philharmonic taped for CBS in just three weeks. The performance scales the heights of Romantic ardor, and the sound is amazingly vibrant. --Ted Libbey

CD Reviews

SPARSE SCHUMANN
Melvyn M. Sobel | Freeport (Long Island), New York | 12/11/2000
(2 out of 5 stars)

"I remember owning the Schumann Symphonies with Bernstein on Columbia vinyls, and I recall loving them. Reacquaintance with Bernstein's 3rd and 4th, on "The Royal Edition" CD, is a major disappointment. The wiry, boxed-in sound makes this reissue, I fear, completely unacceptable, a non-contender. As well, the performances themselves--- surprisingly mannered and pointed--- make this CD... you got it... completely unacceptable, a non-contender. Steer clear. There are far, far better performances to be had.

Best Fourth Ever!!

"I strongly agree with the previous reviewer's comments. Sony did a very good job remastering these old recordings. This NYPO sounds better that the 80's Wiener Philarmoniker and the fourth symphony sounds with a passion like was never heard before, try this CD you won't regret"
