Once heard, never forgotten.
John Austin | Kangaroo Ground, Australia | 09/13/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Once heard, never forgotten. Once you have heard the sweet-toned, elegantly-phrased oboe playing of Leon Goossens you will recognise it anywhere. In the 1930s, "anywhere" was principally in Beecham's London Philharmonic Orchestra, and that is where Elgar heard him and projected a Suite for oboe and small orchestra for him. Sadly it was never finished, but from the surviving fragment Gordon Jacob fashioned a little piece called "Soliloquy" which Goossens recorded in 1975 and which is included in this CD. Other recordings date from as early as 1931. Listen to a few minutes of the Cimarosa/Benjamin Oboe Concerto or the Romances by Schumann, and you'll want to own this CD. Excellent transfers and an authoritative accompanying booklet help to make this 75 minute CD a worthy centenary tribute to Leon Goossens."
