CD Reviews

A Must Have

"I picked this album up while I was in Brazil this summer and I can't stop listening to it. The songs include some of this amazing bands' greatest hits. For those not familiar with Legião Urbana their music reminds me of the early Cure and the Smiths but with their own unique sound (not to mention the fact that they sing in Portuguese). The lead singer has a distinct voice reminiscent of Morrissey but deeper. I would recommend this album for anyone interested in Brazilian rock regardless of whether or not they understand Portuguese."
Cool, but LIVE ALBUMS are never that great

"This album is cool if you're a super fan of Legião Urbana, but it's not the greatest thing. I'm a super fan of the Beatles, so if anything is put out by them or someone else (bootlegs) I get it and listen, interested not only in the Beatles' music, but their personalities, humor (at times self-deprecating) and viewpoints on their music and their world. Legião Urbana's live album is just a live album, no real differences from their studio versions so the only advantage of this is hearing deceased lead singer Renato Russo talk a bit and reveal a little about himself. It's cool to hear him forget the words to one of the songs, stop the band playing and review lyrics with the crowd, but that's about it. Renato, in a not-so-tongue-in-cheek way says after a song,"I adore being idolized, love me!" It's almost like,"Isn't he kidding?" But unfortunately he isn't. And even though I truly love Legião Urbana, their music and creativity (something that seems to be lacking in a lot of South American rock music because most bands sell out creativity for sappy sentimentalism to earn money from teary-eyed latinas, but are soon forgotten) they reveal that even a "down-to-earth" band like Legião resorts to exploiting the Brazilian masses with the stupidest cheese as when, in this album, Renato Russo says,"On this stage is Legião Urbana, but I think you, the crowd, are the real Legião Urbana." If, at a U2 concert, Bono said something like that, I'm sure a couple cheers would fly, but I'd be rolling my eyes along with most people. Please!!! Anyway, I have this album, I can't return it because I ordered it online direct from Brazil, but that's cool, it's fun in the car, I'm just being critical because this is a critique, right?"
