Synopsis

Album Description
By 1976 Lee Perry was entering his most creative and imaginative phase as a creator of music. This body of work is now rightly regarded as a high point in Jamaica's rich musical history. This long awaited set features three of Scratch's multi-textured instrumental/Dub sessions from the mid-to-late seventies. Opening with the original Jamaican mix of "Scratch The Super Ape", the collection also includes the equally rare "Roast Fish, Collie Weed & Corn Bread" and "Return Of The Super Ape", all of which receive their first official CD release with this incredible 2 CD set.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"First thing I noticed was the bass on the Super Ape album. It has never sounded better. I hope you have a good sub-woofer, 'cuz it really is a full bass sound. The next thing I noticed was: the order of the tracks DOES make a big difference. It sounds MUCH better in the order Scratch intended. As for the Roast Fish album, what a godsend. All previous issues of this classic have had low fidelity problems, but that's been solved here. I forgot how great this album is. Soul Fire! As for the Return of the Super Ape album, it's also a pleasure to hear this upgraded recording. It's a strange mix of psychedelic beauty and mystery. The first track is a little too "happy" for my tastes, but all the rest is fascinating. As for the bonus tracks, they're OK, but not super special, though OK Corral is a good alternate version of the jazzy & bizarre title track. Lastly, I wish to call attention to the wisdom contained in the song Super Ape. The fact that the lyrics distringuish between "Ape Man" and "I Man" is a rare example of genuine mystic wisdom in music. Scratch is offering you the opportunity to distinguish between your animal self (ape man) and your mystic, spiritual self (I man). This is highly appreciated. Don't miss the incredible beauty of the song "Bird In Hand" from the Return of the Super Ape CD. I've said it before and I'll say it again: God Bless Mr. Lee Scratch Perry."
