Some plaintive, legato singing.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Collectors of historic recordings of the past are well served by the Austrian label Preiser, or Lebendige Vergangenheit. You can have, sitting on your shelves, in uniform packaging and presentation, souvenirs of remembered and recorded singers of former years, and it is Toti dal Monte (1893-1975) who features first in the series. Claiming a birth year and a name that bore no resemblance to her birth certificate, Toti dal Monte rose to world-wide celebrity in 1921 when she sang Gilda at La Scala under Toscanini. Shrill in the upper register, dark and plaintive in the lower register, her voice was best suited to several of the Italian bel canto roles which are represented on this CD. Most items were recorded in the late 1920s at Milan, some with chorus and some without. Transfers are unfussy, clear and immaculate and the duration is 61 minutes."
