A sound from the past
William Supon | Cedartown, GA USA | 06/13/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Here's a real rarity--a whole CD performed by Martial Singher, a superb French light baritone from the 1940's and 50's. It is a sound not much cultivated nowadays. Most operatic baritones have large, heavy voices which can handle Verdi and Wagner. However, the French repertoire (Valentin, Mercutio, Mephistopheles in Berlioz' "Damnation of Faust," etc.) calls for a lighter, more flexible sound. In this repertoire, Singher was the standard-setter. Compare, for instance, his "Scintille, diamante" with the version by bass-baritones such as George London. The lighter sound makes Dappertutto even more evil and insinuating.

This is a really fine album!"
