One of the Great Tenors- about whom you have never heard
John Ruggeri | Philadelphia, PA USA | 09/08/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"He was about 5' tall. He only sang in the US in New Orleans and he left about 30-40 recordings, hence his unknown status. His voice was huge, warm, flexible and exciting. I have never heard more full voiced higb Cs and D flats from a tenor. These are all acoustical recordings circa 1905 so there are no engineers tricks. His phrasing was artistic and he makes Tamagno sound horribly crude. Escalais' huge voice could sing pianissimo and meza voce as well as open up full throttle.

The piece from Robert le Diable is the first thing I heard him sing. I could not believe what I was hearing. After singing a magnificent High C he takes a magnificent trill and executes one of the cleanest and fastest runs I have ever heard. All this from a true DRAMATIC TENOR not a leggero tenor.

A must buy!!!!!
