CD Reviews

High Octane, Passionate Cello
J. Yeagley | 04/20/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I love this CD. I found it when doing a search for another CD with Gnomentanz. The Janos Starker CD with all the Popper is great, too. Starker was one of Maria Kliegel's teachers so maybe that is one reason why she plays so flawlessly. I think these songs sound beautiful because she also plays them so expressively. The Manuel De Falla is firey and the Rachmaninoff is sultry. She uses her bow to create a rasgueado effect, along with pizzicato on the piece called "Flamenco". I had not heard this kind of bowing before. It's really effective at evoking a guitar-like quality, but then the beautiful lyrical sustain of the bow in the legato parts just takes all that to a supreme level. Beyond just the musical beauty of this CD the technique makes it 5 stars."
