The jazz world can only hope that as the highly elusive wider audience shops for the latest Diana Krall album, they also discover other young jazz vocalists. Laverne Butler is more than a worthy suggestion. Her second album is a dandy that seems to be presented in two distinct parts. The first five selections showcase that dichotomy of the rough, lonely, blues life being confessed through song by a tender female possessed of an incredibly pretty, clear voice, i.e. Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington. Whether or not she's crossing the country for love, as suggested in the clever lyric to Wes Montgomery's classic "West Coast Blues," or smoking and drinking too much, as in the standard "The End of a Love Affair," or even if she's actually killed her man and done time, as Butler convincingly conveys in her original tile track, she's believable in the roles. If the latter portion of the 12-song disc isn't a tribute to one of Butler's obvious influence, Nancy Wilson, it certainly sounds like it. Throughout the album, Bruce Barth, the pianist, arranger and MVP here, bathes Butler in lush string settings and sparse, inventive, contemporary arrangements throughout this winner. --Mark Ruffin

CD Reviews

BUTLER scores big with another future classic!

"Imagine an oceanside bar with the sound of glasses and murmur in the background. A piano under a solitary blue spotlight and an old RCA ribbon microphone in front of a classy-looking femme fatale. Get the picture? Well, this is what comes to mind when you listen to Butler's new CD. Not as pristine as Diane Krall but as bluesy as Billie H. Three cuts have string accompaniment which turns out to be a BIG plus! Thumbs up to producer Bruce Barth! MaxJazz has a way to release excellent CD's one after the other! This CD, Butler's second for MaxJazz, should receive some nominations in next year's awards! Highly recommended!"

"I bought Laverne Butler's "Foolish Thing To Do" two years ago. From then on I've listened to the CD intermittently, and I've never gotten tired it. Her voice is so sincere and rich in tone. I highly recommend this album!"
