CD Reviews

2 For the Price of One
T. Witanek | Houston, TX United States | 08/08/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Laura Love has an amazing voice. I recommended this album strongly to a friend of mine who idolizes Tim O'Brien. He bought the cd and then turned around and told a whole bunch of other people. Their harmonies are spellbinding. "Savin" has something new to hear every time I listen to it. This recording is one of those genre busting albums that creates its own place in music. I'd love to see the reactions of the old puritan bluegrass/gospel fans if we could force em to listen."
Laura Love's 'NeGrass'
Marsie C. McLendon | Washington, DC USA | 07/05/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"For this album, Laura Love has returned to her own Octoroon Biography label (after four albums on major labels), and the results are excellent. As the last reviewer said, it's 'different' in that it's more 'bluegrass' than her usual 'Afro-Celt' offerings (hence the title, 'NeGrass', which by the way is also a play on 'negress', a sn often derogatory term used to descrie a black woman).

When I first heard this album, I was stuck by how all of the songs 'stuck' with me, particularly "Saskatchewan (Juneteenth)", "Passin'", and her reworking of a song that originally appeared on her 'Octoroon' album, "Can't Understand." If you are a Laura Love fan, you will love this album (no pun intended)."
Best Yet But Different
Carilee E. Moran | 03/23/2008

"I own most of Laura Love's other albums and liked them all except Got No Easter Clothes. The music on Negrass was unexpectedly different from the others, but absolute dynamite. I love an album that I can sing along with, and this is one. The songs are imaginative, sometimes playful, sometimes plaintive, easy to commit to memory. The music is different from what's on the "Afro-Celt" albums. She's in fine voice, as usual."
