Amazon.com She played her first-ever gig in the bowels of a Nebraska penitentiary, and Laura Love's career has bordered on invitingly quirky and wildly diverse ever since. Now based in Seattle, Love remains invigorating and infectious on her Zoë Records debut, her sixth release. Her self-penned compositions twist and turn from folk to funk, from pop and blues, all mixed up with her own original blend of poetic rap. The result is a successful network of world-music rhythms, acoustic melodies, and Love's potent vocal delivery (think Suzanne Vega with a double-shot of testosterone). There's a funked-up folk backing to "Sometimes Davey Wins," the album's most instantly familiar cut thanks to Love's traditional nursery-rhyming rants. And there are plenty more: the harmonica-driven "I Am Going to Miss You," a jazzy rendition of Laura Nyro's "Stoned Soul Picnic," and the folk-rocker "Suddenly." CD ReviewsThe Case For Laura Love Pass the popcorn | Wahington DC | 11/20/2000 (5 out of 5 stars) "A friend turned me onto her about 2 weeks ago with this CD, and I just saw her in concert a couple of nights ago. I've been trying to think of another female artist who can go toe to toe with LL, all things considered, and I can't come up with anybody:1. First of all, she PLAYS an instrument. And not an instrument that can float on top of the band. ie, piano, guitar, horns, etc. As a bass player, in my opinion, she is the most integral part of the rhythm section, creating the whole groove; even more than the drummer, because she also has the harmonic component. And not just any bass part - she creates a ferocious groove that demonstrates a true technical and rhythmic ability.2. Her voice and singing is so varied and convincing. Maybe not the kind of natural-phenomenon-type of voice in the accepted sense of your vocal "divas" - Whitney H., Natalie Cole, Mariah C., Celine Dion, etc. Yet she appears to be more versatile than they are, and delivers it in a more natural, unrehearsed, uncontrived manner. Which, for me, is all related to the next point...3. Material. Almost all of those powerhouse singers do stuff that was written FOR them, not BY them. And most of it is so bad. Only the occaisonal really good song, and in the big picture, that just ain't enough.4. For her instrumental, writing, and vocal prowess, I have to automatically put her above the aforementioned artists. Which leaves the few girls who can play, write, and sing ie.Jewel, Etheridge, Indigos, Rickie Lee, Morrisette, MacLachlan, etc, don't have anything near her instrumental chops, nor the voice. The more sophisticated females, Joni Mitchell, Diana Krall, etc., in my opinion just don't have the emotional power and delivery, or diversity. There are many really good female jazzers, but they are for the most part interpreting other people's music, and typically don't play AND sing, so I can't put them in her league.5. Lastly, is there anybody with that kind of magnetism on stage - anybody who can combine that with the musicality? Laura Love is a music MACHINE!! The CD is wonderful, but it really doesn't do her justice - you need to see this girl live." An amazing album from Laura Love Stuart Rice | Sacramento, CA | 07/05/2000 (5 out of 5 stars) "If "Shum Ticky" disappointed some fans by rehashing old material, then "Fourteen Days" will make you a true believer. Getting right back on the same track as her amazing "Octoroon," Laura funks, blues, raps, and slams her way through these musical gems. All the gifts of witty lyrics and slamming musical compositions are back with a vengence.The opening cut, More of You, opens with a rhythm and guitar section that seems like a slowed-down, enriched version of the opening to "Give me Five" from Shum Ticky. Laura sounds almost sultry and smokey on these lyrics; then her chorus breaks into the lyrical yodel/singing that is so... Laura. "Fourteen Days" is another gem, with the kind of witty song-writing that just makes you want to laugh out load from the sheer joy of it all. "Sometimes Davey Wins," a personal favorite, rocks out, with Laura providing a trademark over-track on some of the verses, adding a mouth-music like rhythm track over the song. And lyrical, well she's right on point.Especially nice is her recording of Stoned Soul Picnic. You can just see Laura, her girlfriend, and a bunch of her buddies riding to the park to have a lazy picnic in the grass. It's just so smooth and soothing, you want to hum and sing along with windows or the top down, riding through the country.I hope Laura's around for a very long time -- her music just keeps getting better and better."
