CD Reviews

What a Relief
08/20/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is Larry's return to the hardcore emotional lyrics we are expecting of him. The last Black 47 release was a big flop to me. It was reggai based and lacked the depth of the first few albums (problem the record companies doings). This is definetely touching a new side of Larry that is excellent. A singer with his guitar. Great Album!"
Strong performance from Kirwan and musicians

"Fans of Black 47 are used to Larry Kirwan's excellent writing, wonderful storytelling, and distinctive voice. We are also used to outstanding musicianship. Kirwan delivers all of this and more on this solo effort. This is not a Black 47 performance (it's much too quiet for that!) though there are recognizable connections between this CD and some of the more popular tracks off Black 47s Trouble in the Land CD (like "Tramps Heartbreak" and "Fallin off the edge of America"). Kirwan works with an interesting mix of outstanding musicians on this CD and the overall performance is excellent. My pattern with this CD followed my usual pattern with Kirwan's work: when I first heard it I thought "what in the world has he done this time? I don't like it at all!" And then, sure enough, after another listen or two I found myself catching on, appreciating each song at many levels. Now I find myself listening to it over and over again. Congratulations to Larry Kirwan for another outstanding effort."
